Proposal

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1: Proposal

In week 2, we were assigned to form a group of 6 members to complete this project. Our project's general theme is "Cultural Sensitivity in Design".

Requirement
- Study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture that is perceived as 'sensitive', and 'frame' our study within the chosen theme.
- Convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but within a presentable interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness among viewers.
- Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express our interpretation using design language. Each idea should be supported by a short rationale. Conduct visual research to help expand idea generation.

Proposal
Our group had a lengthy discussion about our topic. We ended up with three proposal ideas and decided to let our lecturers pick which topic we would continue with. Our initial ideas were: "Tattoo culture in Western Society VS Eastern Society", "Cultural Appropriation of Black Music in K-POP", and "Fashion Stealing from Different Cultures".

For this task, we researched each idea extensively and divided the work based on everyone's interests. I focused on the topic of "Fashion Stealing from Different Cultures" because I suggested it and this topic can be expanded to find more research.

After review by our supervisor, the topic of the rationale of "Cultural Appropriation of Black Culture in K-pop" has been selected.

Project 2: Data Collection

For data collection, our group decided to conduct a Google Form survey and online research. However, we only received responses from 10 people via the Google Form survey. Many K-pop fans we met didn't know about cultural appropriation by K-pop idols, resulting in a limited quantity of responses.

Regarding online research, we searched for instances of cultural appropriation by K-pop idols and documented netizens opinions, paying particular attention to feedback from Black users.

Research

For the Google Survey, we made 8 questions asking about what responders knew and how they felt about the topic.

Final Project

For our previous ideas did not convey much awareness and had little to do with the topic of K-pop. So, we decided to create a music video with adjusted lyrics to convey how using AAVE (African American Vernacular English) in K-pop is not necessary.

We needed to come up with an outcome that conveyed a message to the viewer. We wanted to raise awareness about this topic and how K-POP can become more inclusive and respectful towards Black people.

So, we remake the music video for "Money" by Lisa, creating a version that does not include cultural appropriation of Black culture. We changed the lyrics that had AAVE to standard English. Additionally, we chose the entire video location on our campus. In the video, we used real money to present the title, for example purchasing food, drinks, and also digital e-wallets transfer.

REFLECTION

For this assignment, we're not only learning about the assignment itself, but also learning a lot about team collaboration. In design school, most of our assignments are individual, so I've learned about team coordination and time management. As for the assignment topic, cultural sensitivity is something I hadn't explored before, making it a bit challenging for me, but in the end our group done it.

For our topic discovering about K-pop cultural appropriation, which I've never explored before because I'm not a K-pop fan. The interesting part is how we altered the cultural appropriation in the original video lyrics, which included elements of black culture, to make it doesn't involve cultural appropriation. Overall, gained a lot from this assignment and will strive to improve even further in the next semester.
