LECTURES

Topic 1: Contrast & Gestalt Theory

Contrast
- Putting different things together.
- without contrast, visual experience would be boring.
- Contrast can make what you see more interesting, highlight something and show a message.

Contrast example

Gestalt Theory
- Gestalt" refers to "shape" or "form" in German.
Gestalt principles are like visual rules that help us understand how our eyes see things.
Show how we can break down complicated scenes into simpler shapes and how our eyes see these shapes as one whole thing instead of many separate parts.

Topic 2: Balance & Emphasis

Balance
- Balance in design is how the visual weight is spread around.
-  All the design elements work together to create a balanced look.
- Arranging things symmetrically or asymmetrically.

Balance example

Emphasis
- Emphasis in design helps make certain things stand out and be the main focus.
- Can use different things like color, shapes, or brightness to make something more dominant and grab attention.

Emphasis example

Topic 3: Repetition & Movement

Repetition
- Can make a work of design seem active.
- Creates rhythm and pattern.
- Avoid monotony.

Repetition example

Movement
- Seem to be moving in a visual image.
- Comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves.

Movement example

Topic 4: Harmony & Unity

Harmony
Harmony in design means choosing things that go well together.
- Making sure all the elements in design fit together, whether have a similar theme, style, or mood.

Harmony example

Unity
Using the same colors, shapes, or materials throughout your design to make it all look connected and pulled together.
- Happens when the elements are arranged to feel balanced and connected, creating a single theme or idea.

Topic 5: Symbol, Word & Image

Symbol
- A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else.
- provide or convey information, to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story.

Pictorial Symbol
- Image related and simplified pictures.

Pictorial Symbol example

Abstract Symbol
- Can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.

Abstract Symbol example

Arbitrary Symbol
Don't look like what they represent.
- Invented with the meaning constructed.
- Often use shapes and colors, like simple geometric ones.

Arbitrary Symbol example

Word and Image
Use suitable and relevant images when designing.
- Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery.

INSTRUCTION

For Task 1, we are required to choose and provide a brief description of one goal from the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

We are required to select an existing art/design work that revolves around that goal of your choice. Beneath the image, include the credit line of the art/design work (title of art/design work, artist’s/designer’s name, year, size, medium, source link).

After that, we need to explain in 100-150 words why you chose that design in relation to the UNSDG goal and list the design principles you observed in that design.

Task 1
I choose the Goal 5 - Gender EqualityThis goal aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Chosen artwork:

Title of Art / Design Work: Equal Opportunities
Artist's / Designer's Name: Lucía Sancho Hernández

This artwork relates to UNSDG Goal 5 - Gender Equality. I really like the title of this piece, 'Equal Opportunities.' This title is straightforward well with the UNSDG Goals, particularly gender equality. In the artwork, we can see people of different colors engaged in various jobs at different locations, using different tools. Everyone has their own tasks and responsibilities.

Additionally, the artwork uses vibrant colors to represent different places, jobs, and the diverse skin tones of the people. Smart use of colors, matching dark tones for places that need darkness and light tones for places that need light. The overall effect is comfortable and attractive.

This artwork employs the design principles of Unity, as depicted by a rocket aligned at the top of the building. Inside the building, different squares represent various kinds of jobs. The colors, shapes, and all the design elements can be connected together.
