Task 3 - Design

INSTRUCTION

For Task 3, we need to produce a work of design inspired by or in reaction to the one we analyzed.

In Task 3, we need to do:

1. Find some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas.
2. Create 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas.
3. Produce a final design in A4 size, JPEG format.
4. Write a rationale, consisting of about 150-200 words, explaining and defending the decisions made in your design. This should include the meaning and purpose of the design, as well as the design principles evident within it.

Improvement
After receiving Dr. Charles feedback, I decided to use the X-Men poster layout as my reference. I selected specific professions that are often stereotypically associated with men, such as astronaut, fighter pilot, diver, and police.

Final Outcome

"Unisex" is the title of my design. This poster aims to promote gender equality. Below the title "Unisex", there is a short quote "She is," giving space for thought to the audience when viewing this poster.

In the poster, I depict four positions typically defined as men's jobs. The first job is astronaut, featuring a Muslim woman. The design aims to represent that gender, race, or religion should not define one's opportunities. It serves to remind every woman that they can simply enjoy life nowadays, do what they want to do, achieve their dreams, and pursue any job they like. The second position is woman fighter pilot, emphasizing that skies and heights are equal, and gender knows no bounds. The next job is a woman diver engineer, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It need venturing into the ocean's depths to address structural or safety issues, and women are equally capable of excelling in this field.  And the last job is woman army, showing that women can do jobs usually seen as for men, protecting the people and the country.

For the design layout, I drew inspiration from the X-Men poster. I also incorporate different design principles into my artwork. Firstly, I used balance between the drawing of four job positions. Use emphasis at the title to ensure it stands out the poster's message. I strived for unity in design styles and drawing style. Overall, the artwork appears harmony, as each component and color complements one another.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
After receiving feedback from Dr. Charles, my sketches were too ordinary and very common to see artwork like what my sketches drawn, although it represented gender equality. He suggests adding things like sailor captain hats or fighter jet helmets, stuff typically seen as masculine but are actually for anyone. Can follow this thinking line to improve the sketches.

Week 7
The final version looks good, but the diver position is common, can do some research and  change it to a job typically associated with men. For the quotes, "She is the man", can make it to 'She is,' allowing the audience more room to interpret the artwork.
